Base Camp

A Place of Gathering, Safety, and Inspiration

A welcoming home for outdoor learning.

The Canadian Rockies Outdoor Learning Centre (OLC) offers a comfortable and well-equipped space where students and educators prepare for learning and return to reflect. Nestled within Bow Valley Provincial Park, the OLC combines newly renovated indoor facilities with easy access to surrounding natural areas. It serves as a place of gathering, safety, and inspiration.

A place to gather and grow.

The main lodge is the heart of the base camp. It provides a warm indoor space for orientation, reflection, and shared meals, with room to accommodate up to 135 people. A commercial kitchen supports meal preparation for groups throughout the program experience.

Spaces that support learning.

A new classroom building offers an indoor setting for workshops, instruction, and group discussions. With space for up to 45 students, it provides a comfortable environment for lessons that complement time on the land.

Comfortable and welcoming accommodations.

Three recently renovated cabins offer a welcoming space for students to rest and recharge. Each cabin includes bunk beds, showers, and full amenities. Together, the cabins provide sleeping space for up to 72 students.

Access to natural learning environments.

Surrounded by the Canadian Rockies, the OLC offers direct access to forests, rivers, wetlands, and trails. These surrounding landscapes support year-round programming and allow students to engage deeply with seasonal changes, ecological systems, and local wildlife.

Well-equipped for adventure.

The OLC maintains a full range of outdoor gear to support hands-on learning in all seasons for full classes. Equipment includes cross-country skis, snowshoes, avalanche safety tools, tandem canoes, voyageur canoes, and backcountry travel equipment. Students are supported with high-quality resources that help build confidence and safety in the outdoors.

Reliable transportation options.

Transportation is available through the OLC’s dedicated federal bus fleet, operated by CRPS. When requested, students can be transported to and from the base camp or to designated field locations safely and efficiently.

A space built for connection and purpose.

The OLC is more than a facility. It is a base where students find belonging, build relationships, and prepare for the learning that happens beyond the walls. Whether starting a morning around the fire or returning from a day in the field, students find comfort, safety, and community in this shared space.
