Safety Practices

Safety That Supports Learning

Creating safe spaces for learning, adventure, and growth.

Safety is the foundation of every experience at the Canadian Rockies Outdoor Learning Centre (OLC). Every program is supported by highly trained staff, carefully developed procedures, and strong partnerships that ensure students can explore with confidence and care. Through thoughtful planning and expert leadership, students learn in an environment where safety supports learning, not limits it.

Experienced leaders with expert training.

The OLC team brings a wide range of qualifications to support safe, high-quality instruction across all activities. Staff members hold certifications in areas that reflect best practices in outdoor education and wilderness safety, including:

  • Wilderness First Aid (40 hour) or First Responder (80 hour)
  • Avalanche Safety Training (AST 1, AST 2 and Operations Level 1)
  • Outdoor Leadership Training
  • Paddle Canada Instructor Certification (Waterfront, Moving Water, Big Boat)
  • Canadian Association of Nordic Ski Instructors (Level 1)
  • Association of Canadian Mountain Guides certifications (Hiking Guide, Top Rope Climbing Instructor)
  • Class 2 driver’s licences for safe and flexible student transportation

Regular safety meetings are held to review procedures, enhance preparedness, and ensure alignment with current best practices in outdoor risk management.

Risk management that supports exploration.

Every activity and location are supported by a detailed Emergency Action Plan. Staff are trained to respond calmly and effectively in a range of situations, ensuring students remain safe while learning to navigate risk in real-world environments. The OLC team works in close partnership with Alberta Parks to follow established policies for operating within Kananaskis Country, including guiding permits and instructional protocols.

A secure foundation for meaningful learning.

The OLC’s commitment to safety creates a strong foundation for students to take healthy risks, grow in confidence and gain lifelong outdoor skills. With expert instructors and a culture of care, students learn to assess risk, build resilience and move through the world with awareness and responsibility.
