Water Experience 15

Hands-On Learning in the Bow Valley Watershed

The Water Experience Program at the Canadian Rockies Outdoor Learning Centre (OLC) is a three-day, two-night immersive learning opportunity where students build outdoor skills, earn Alberta Education credits, and connect deeply with water, place, and community. Nestled within the pristine Kananaskis Country, this program offers students a chance to meet curricular outcomes through meaningful experience on the land and water.

Students complete all required online coursework prior to arrival, then bring that learning to life through activities that foster confidence, leadership, and ecological awareness. Guided by outdoor educators and local experts, this program blends personal growth, wellness, and real-world application.

Students earn 10 Alberta Education credits through the program:

  • Water Experience 15 (LDC1492) – 3 credits
  • Leadership, Character and Social Responsibility (LDC1509) – 5 credits
  • Forest Ecology in Regions of Canada (FOR1020) – 1 credit
  • Nature and Wellness (HSS1100) – 1 credit

Educator reflection.

“This experience changes students in ways the classroom simply can’t.”

"The Water Experience Program allows us to see a different side of our students — one that often doesn’t emerge in traditional settings. Whether taking responsibility in the kitchen, building shelters, or working together on the water, students step up in ways that surprise even themselves. Some of our learners who struggle in a regular classroom gain confidence and thrive here. They build real-world skills, develop a deeper appreciation for the outdoors, and create lasting memories that still come up in graduation conversations. For many, this is their first time in the mountains. It’s challenging and exhausting at times, but by the end, most say they wish they could do it again. This program has shifted how we approach learning at our school. It supports curriculum goals, builds relationships, and brings out leadership in students who didn’t know they had it. We’re proud to make it a core part of our Gr. 10 year and are now expanding to Gr. 11. It’s something students look forward to - not because they have to do it, but because they get to." ~ Greg Lendvay, Associate Principal, Three Hills School

Learning outcomes grounded in real experience.

Students build capacity in three key areas:

  • Leadership and Decision Making: Strengthen collaboration, communication, and personal responsibility through team challenges, trip planning, and reflection.
  • Ecological Literacy: Explore water ecosystems, watershed health, and the importance of conservation using both Indigenous and Western science.
  • Wellness and Resilience: Develop confidence, self-awareness, and problem-solving skills through active participation and community connection.

Activities that challenge and inspire.

Students take part in a variety of outdoor learning activities that bring their coursework to life:

  • Flatwater canoeing and Paddle Canada skills development
  • Navigation, terrain assessment, and safety planning
  • Watershed ecology and citizen science projects
  • Leadership training and trip preparation
  • Group dialogue, reflection, and journaling
  • Service learning in partnership with local conservation groups

A safe, supportive and fully supervised environment.

All field components are led by OLC certified teachers with Wilderness First Aid and supported by trained program assistants and professional outdoor partners. The OLC operates under Alberta Parks' Instructional and Guiding Permit, with comprehensive risk management protocols in place. Students are provided with a detailed packing list and are required to bring suitable clothing and footwear for outdoor and canoe-based activity.

Transportation to and from the course start and end locations are the responsibility of the visiting school or student unless arranged otherwise. The Canadian Rockies Public Schools (CRPS) manages all transportation from the OLC to all activity venues.

A full learning journey.

Prior to arrival, students complete online coursework through a secure CRPS Google Classroom account. A laptop is required. Assessment includes digital assignments, group work, journaling, quizzes, and discussion. Final marks will be submitted to Alberta Education and accessible through myPass.

More than a course. A journey that leads forward.

Water Experience 15 offers students a unique path to explore learning, identity, and leadership through land-based education. It fosters wellness, builds skills, and supports alternative pathways to success. Students return with a stronger sense of purpose, deeper community connection, and a lasting relationship with the land.
