What students gain through WimWe.
This experience-based program builds capacity across four essential areas:
- Risk Management and Safety Skills: Students earn Avalanche Skills Training (AST 1) certification from Avalanche Canada, learning how to assess hazards and use safety equipment in real-world conditions.
- Outdoor Confidence and Technical Competence: Activities like canoeing, hiking, and skiing develop foundational outdoor abilities and decision-making skills.
- Critical Thinking and Leadership: Through teamwork, group challenges, and reflective learning, students build confidence, communication, and responsibility.
- Wellness and Resilience: Students grow emotionally, socially, and physically as they navigate natural terrain and build lasting relationships.
Activities that challenge and inspire.
Throughout six immersive outdoor experiences, students participate in:
- Avalanche Canada AST 1 certification training
- Avalanche science, risk assessment, and terrain evaluation
- Voyageur canoeing in local waterways
- Cross-country skiing
- Hiking and outdoor group navigation
- Team-building challenges and reflection activities
Integrated learning, grounded in safety.
Before heading into the field, students complete a combination of online learning modules and classroom instruction led by the OLC's certified avalanche professionals. This structured preparation ensures students have the knowledge to make safe decisions in the backcountry. Once on the land, they apply this learning in hands-on scenarios, developing both individual awareness and group readiness.
Students are taught using industry-standard equipment and mentored by experts from LLSR and certified Association of Canadian Mountain Guides. All instruction takes place under the supervision of OLC staff.
More than outdoor education. A foundation for life.
WimWe prepares students not just for safe travel in the mountains, but for thoughtful, confident decision-making in everyday life. As one Gr. 10 student shared, “This course will help me be safer in the backcountry and know what I need to be aware of. It could make a big difference in someone’s life.”
Whether navigating avalanche terrain or simply learning how to work in a team, the skills students gain through WimWe will stay with them far beyond high school.
Students are encouraged to speak with their school counsellor to learn more. This is your time to build the confidence and skills that will carry you forward.
