Educator reflections.

“This program offers something truly special that schools can’t do on their own.”

"The Winter Travel 15 Program is incredibly dynamic. Every time I’ve brought students, I’ve walked away thinking just how much they gain. From avalanche rescue training in deep snow to risk management and team-building, students get hands-on experience in a way that just isn’t possible in a traditional classroom. The program is packed with meaningful learning - whether it’s from instructors in Kananaskis, time spent in the classroom at the Outdoor Learning Centre, or learning alongside ski patrol at Lake Louise. The pre-learning and assessments are substantial, but necessary, and the OLC team has worked hard to make it all happen. I always tell my students to give themselves time and space to really engage with it. This kind of experience pushes students to step up, take responsibility, and try something new. And honestly, I learn something every time too - watching other instructors teach, exploring new methods, and sharing in the energy of it all. The OLC is doing something few others can offer, and I’m always excited to come back." ~  Mike Rudolf, Outdoor Pursuits Teacher, North Trail High School

Learning outcomes grounded in real experience.

Students build capacity in three key areas:

  • Leadership and Decision-Making: Strengthen judgment, confidence, and collaboration through terrain assessment, navigation, and team-based problem solving
  • Winter Travel and Risk Management: Develop avalanche awareness, functional fitness, and emergency response strategies grounded in best safety practices
  • Career Awareness and Personal Growth: Explore occupational pathways, build interpersonal skills, and reflect on personal values in a challenging and rewarding environment

Activities that challenge and inspire.

Students engage in a wide range of meaningful learning experiences that connect directly to curricular outcomes:

  • Winter navigation, terrain reading and avalanche safety
  • Risk assessment and emergency scenario response
  • Functional fitness and nutrition in cold-weather environments
  • Introduction to career pathways through mentorship with outdoor professionals
  • Journaling, reflection, and team dialogue
  • Service learning and community connection

A safe, supportive and fully supervised environment.

Lake Louise Ski Resort risk management policies and procedures will be reviewed and are to be followed by all Winter Travel 15 participants. Participants will be skiing / snowboarding on in-bounds controlled runs only. Snowshoeing and cross country skiing activities take place on designated trails listed by the Parks Canada - Avalanche Terrain Exposure Scale (ATES) as Class 1 - Simple Terrain.

All areas visited during the program have been selected in consultation with Parks Canada Visitor Safety staff to ensure terrain access guidelines are being followed and have been visited and pre-assessed by CROLC teachers. All equipment used during the course is checked and maintained regularly to ensure it is proper working order. Special Note: Students are able to bring their own downhill skiing or snowboarding equipment provided that it is in good working order or can rent downhill skiing or snowboarding equipment from Lake Louise Ski Resort.

All field experiences are led by certified CRPS teachers with Wilderness First Aid, supported by professional partners including Parks Canada staff, CSIA ski instructors, Lake Louise Ski Patrol, Canadian Avalanche Association instructors, and certified mountain guides.

The winter environment can present challenges with outdoor activity and cold temperatures. Winter gear lists will be issued to students upon registration and will be checked upon arrival. Extra clothing and gear will be on hand for students to borrow in case of inadequate preparation. Students will be briefed thoroughly on the appropriate dress and layering technique for outdoor winter clothing. Outdoor activity will be closely monitored during cold temperatures with a cut off temperature of -25 C with windchill.

Transportation to and from the course start and end locations are the responsibility of the visiting school or student unless arranged otherwise. Canadian Rockies Public Schools (CRPS) manages all transportation from the OLC to all activity venues.

A full learning journey.

Prior to arrival, students complete all online coursework and assignments through a secure CRPS Google Classroom account. A laptop is required. Assessment includes assignments, quizzes, journaling, and group discussions. Final marks will be submitted to Alberta Education and accessed through myPass.
